| Chadian rebels deny a government statement that they've begun peace talks… |
| Rebel spokesperson Ali Ordjo has denied the Foreign Minister's statement that negotiations were underway, accusing him of trying to manipulate the international community into believing that the rebellion had been defeated. The Chadian government has been under pressure from the European Union to hold talks. The instability in that country is said to be hampering international efforts to deliver aid to half a million refugees from Sudan's Darfur region and Chadians displaced by violence. Meanwhile, Chadian authorities have been unable to find missing opposition politicians, who went missing since a foiled rebel attack on N'djamena earlier this month. The authorities have also promised to launch a new investigation that could include the international community. The government has acknowledged that the missing include two top politicians, a spokesperson for the opposition alliance and veteran opposition leader. A third opposition leader, former President Mahamat Choua, was found alive last week. |
