| Nigeria has revealed that the detained oil delta rebel leader HENRY OKA is alive…. |
| The revelation was the first official admission by Nigerian authorities that Mr Okah was in their custody since MEND said he had been brought to Nigeria last Thursday after being arrested in Angola. The rebel group said in an email to journalists it had received information that Okah had been shot dead during interrogation in a military hospital in northern Kaduna state early on Tuesday. Uncertainty over his whereabouts and what the authorities plan to do with him has already raised tensions since his transfer to Nigeria. His faction which led a wave of attacks on the industry in early 2006 that shut down a fifth of Nigerian output has boycotted talks with the government since he was arrested in Angola on gun-running charges in September. Mr Okah's fate is crucial to the progress of tentative peace talks in the delta, home to Africa's biggest oil industry which produces 2.1 million barrels per day. |
